Why is feathering important?

Feathering affects the edges of your selection and the main reason to use it to soften the transition between the selection and the surrounding area. Without this option, there would be a clear separation between your choice and the background. This technique is widely used in photographic processing which should smooth the transitions in areas that have been copied and pasted to disappear or defects or unwanted objects in photos.
