Photo frames; apart from their aesthetic use they can catch the eye of the viewer making your photos stand out from competition.
In this handy tutorial you will learn how to easily add a photo line frame.

So here we go:

First open you photo and save it as standard layer. You do this by simply doubleclicking on the photo’s layer and transform it on standard layer through the dialogue window.

Next in order to add a border we will need more space around the photo. To do this we will increase the canvas size through Image->Canvas Size which will bring forward the canvas dialogue window. The easier way to add more space around the image is by ticking the button “Relative” and lets increase the size by 100x100. This means that 50 additional pixels will be added on either sides on vertically and horizontally of your photo.

Once you hit Enter this will add the border as described above, but in transparent mode. To fill it in with solid color create a separate layer for the border and hit Ctrl+Backspace. This will fill it in with the color preselected on your color selection area, in this case White since the default mode is black and white.

Now you are ready to start editing your frame. Hit Ctrl+click on the photo layer, this will choose the entire size of your photo. Once done create a new layer (you should have 3 layers by now all in all) .
Next click Edit->Stroke and this will bring up a new dialogue window which essentially will allow us to add a line round the photo.
On that window you can adjust 3 elements. The desired color of your framing line, its width and its position in relation to your photo.
We will go for a standard red, a width of 10pixels and Center it in relation to the margin of our photo, feel free to play around with these options.

And this is your result until now, which looks okay-ish but there is definitely room for improvement.

So will now repeat the last 2 steps. Go ahead and create a new layer and choose again your main photo layer by Click+Ctrl.
Then again Edit->Stroke but this time choose a different color we will go for black and this will add a black line frame over the existing red one.

Next add a Layer Mask on the black line frame by simply selecting the black line frame layer and clicking on the layer mask icon on the bottom of your layers window.

Now click on the Gradient Tool and by holding down Shift Click+Drag from the top of your picture to the bottom.

This will make your line frame progressively from red to black creating a nice effect round your photo.

We are not yet done though, to make our frame more punchy we can add a layer style on the red part of the line frame. So ensuring you have selected the red line frame layer click on Layer Style button and add a Drop Shadow effect.

On the dialogue window choose the direction of your shadow, we will go for a 140 degrees and lower the opacity (round 30 should be ok) so its a soft shadow.

Hit ok and now you have a classy and yet simple looking frame round your photo.

Experiment with different colors and shadows and make your photos really stand out!

Maybe you remember those pre CS Photoshop versions where you had to manipulate masking to shed some light to shadowed areas on your photos?
Well maybe you dont, but because we do, we thought of sharing the following quick tip available in the CS versions.

Here we have a nature themed photo, where the shadows on the inside of the branch are not that easy on the eye.

Click Image> Adjustments > Shadow/Highlight which will bring up the following dialogue box.

You will notice that unless you have messed with the Shadows setting before, the default setting is on 50% which may make certain photos look bleached, especially if there is already too much light involved.
We slide the Shadow setting to 35-40% and the entire picture brightens up making the shadow less destructive.

You can play around with the highlights as well, but be careful as this may take the focus off the subject of the picture and to the background as the highlights setting tends to emphasize the entire colors spectrum rather grossly. If you feel there is the need for a quick highlighting try anything below 10-15% .

There comes the time when you want to throw the perfect party. It will have everything including fancy drinks, the coolest music, decorations, a theme and a flyer! The last bit is what we ll address with this tutorial. Since this can be an extremely broad theme, we will show an easy and fast way that delivers each time.

First decide on the main theme of your flyer and pic a picture that will do the trick. It can be a beach if its a summer party, a swimming pool, a snowed-up mountain, well you get the idea. We will use a city picture for an urban themed flyer.

Start a new project File->New , and set the frame of your flyer to the standard paper size for flyers. Thats 8.5inches in width and 11 inches in height.

Next grab your Paint Bucket Tool and choose black color as background for your new project and create a new layer.

Open your main theme picture if you dont have it open already and by using the Move Tool drug the image into your black flyer.

You will probably notice that the picture does not precisely fit in the flyer’s canvas. To solve this we will resize the image to fit exactly into the canvas. Hit CTRL+T (Command on Mac) or Edit->Free Transform to dynamically resize the image by good ol’ clicking and dragging.

Next rearrange your layers by pulling Layer 1 over Layer 2 on your Layers window.
Now we will blend the two layers by using the Gradient Tool.

First click on the Rectangular Marquee Tool and select the area around the image. Once done choose the Gradient Tool and make sure the colors sequence is from black to white. Hold down Shift and Click and Drag a line from the centre of your canvas half way up creating a straight line.

Once you are happy with the result, go to your layers window and click on the Layer Blending Mode and from the drop down menu choose Multiply and once done merge the two layers (the image and the canvas) into one by hitting Ctrl+E , alternatively link the two layers by clicking on the tick box next to the eye icon of your layers this will bring up a chain do this on both layer and finally click on Layers menu and Merge. This will create a beautiful smooth effect between the two layers.

And you are almost done. What is left is the message of the flyer for which we will use the Type Tool.

The possibilities here are truly endless you may want to use a standard Fonts Format or go for something more extravagant in which case you can consult one of our other tutorials on, 3D typography, Fire text or Burning Neon Effect. The idea is to use the black area of your canvas for your message! So go on be creative and have a great party!

We have shown how to make someone look thin, but what if the problem is not calling for such drastic measures but rather for some gentle body re-sculpting? Thats what you will learn through this tutorial; how to reshape a body figure. This technique creates a more subtle effect, which may be a better idea for your public photos. You can do this either with the smudge tool or the liquify tools, we prefer the liquify tool because the smudge tool takes away some of the quality of the original picture.

Our model in this case doesnt really need a liposuction but we will operate on her anyway for the shake of this tutorial.

Once you open your image on photoshop reach for your Liquify filter. You will find this under the Filter menu->Liquify.

Pick the Forward Warp Tool, thats the little hand tool on the top left.

Next we identify the area we want to reshape and gently click and push inwards. In the image below we are re-shaping the waste. This process requires stable hand and a bit of artistic touch. If you overdo it and the figure looks fake just hit ctrl+z and retry.

Repeat on the other side of the waste so it looks symmetric.

Next we will augment the model’s buttocks. We will use again the Warp Tool but a different technique. Instead of pushing from outside the body inwards we will click and drag from inside the body outwards. Its a really handy tool and it contributes hugely to this being a quick edit.

Click and drag, click and drag, slow moves till your get the desired result, dont be afraid to experiment.

Next we will augment the model’s breasts. Reach for the Bloat tool.

With gentle strokes, click and drag around the breast area, do this from the centre to get a more natural result.

Repeat on the other breast and you are done. Hope you have fun trying this tut.

In this tutorial you will learn how to create a very convincing fire explosion using simple brushes which you can afterwards apply over photographs to get a cool explosion effect. The very strong point of this method is that it takes very little time and you need very basic tools that all photoshop editions offer.

Create a canvas with a black background and pick a soft edge brush with white as the foreground color and create a new layer.

On the new layer start painting random swirls, dont try to give it a particular shape, the more random it looks the better the final result!

If you want to get more variations on the shapes of your doodles just lower the opacity of your brush by 20-30% .

Next reach for your smudge tool and start dragging lines out from the core of the drawing you just created. Make sure that all the lines you paint begin from the centre as this will give your explosion a more radiating effect. Keep dragging lines with the smudge tool until you have created a halo around your initial drawing.

To prepare for the next step we will lock the Transparency of this layer. This will prevent color from spilling over the edges of the lines. Do this by clicking on the Lock button above the layers palette as shown below.

Next from the color palette set the foreground and background colors of the layer to red and yellow. You do not need to worry about the shade of the colors now as we will apply layers, just go for the basic shades.

The go to Filters->Render and click on the Clouds filter, this is what you should be looking at by now , well more or less…

Next change the colors of the layer to the default black and white and apply the Clouds Filter again, thats FIlters->Render->Clouds FIlter, this will eliminate all color from the image. Now go to Edit->Fade or simply hit Ctrl-Shift+F on your keyboard, that Ctrl-Command+F for Mac.This will bring forward the Fade dialogue, we will change the way the filter is applied from Normal to Linear Light.

Hit OK and this is the end result.

Now it may not say much on its own, but if you apply it on top of an image then the result is really impressive. And that is the coolest feature of this explosion effect that it is easy to create and as easy to customize it so it can be applied on almost all photos. So time for some creative chaos!

Ever wondered what a stock photo might look like without the watermark before you actually buy it? Luckily there is a tool that you can use to easily get rid of that annoying watermark. Of course this method should not be used to steal stock photos content. So lets jump to the juicy bits.

Open your stock photo and reach for your Clone Stamp Tool. You will find this on your left hand toolbar.

Zoom in to the watermarked area of your stock image, CTRL and + should do it.

Hold Alt down. This will turn the circle cursor thingy of your Clone Stamp Tool into a circled cross.

Select an are on the screen that is not watermarked but has the same colorings, or as close as possible to the color shades of the watermarked area.

Once you identify your area, click on that exact spot. This will copy the settings of that area.

Go to the watermarked area with has similar colorings to the one you just selected and start painting over it. This will paste the settings of the watermark free area.

Continue this process with the rest of your picture and remember to switch the copied area every few clicks so the de-watermarked area does not seem fake.

Rinse and repeat until you have removed the entire watermark body. In the end zoom out and go back to areas that may require a few more brushes.

And there you have it, sweat free.

Nose job, nose nip tuck, nose enhancement, you can call it however you like, the truth remains, quite a few people out there are not happy with their noses. On today’s tutorial we will see how you can play around with the width and the length of your nose, blood-swelling-risk free.
For this tutorial we will use the laso tool and free transform mainly so its a rather straight forward technique. What is important to remember is that you are aiming for a subtle effect. Any too radical change will make the end result look fake
So lets go into the specifics.

Step 1. Open you picture on your photoshop. We will use a famous nose for ours; that of Barbra Streisand.

Step 2. At this point you need to think a bit like a plastic surgeon. What we can do with Barbra Streisand’s nose is to make look not as long as well as not so wide. So decide beforehand how you want to interfere.

Step 3. Reach out for your lasso tool on the left hand sidebar. The normal lasso tool will do.

Step 4. With your lasso tool selected start drawing around the nose losely. Dont try to draw the exact nose line, its fine if you choose a wider area round the nose.

Step 5. From your top selections bar choose Select->Modify->Feather

Step 6. Choose your layers palette and hit ctrl+J . This will create a layer with the area you outlined with your lasso tool.

Step 7. Choose the nose layer. If the nose area you see is too small or there is some “nose” missing, then reduce the feather tool radius by a few pixels. You should be seeing the entire nose and some surrounding area.

Step 8. Once you are happy with the selected nose area, hit the shortcut for the Free Transform tool, this is Ctrl+T .Alternatively you can find it under the Edit button.

Step 9. What you can do here is move the edges for the Transform tool frame to adjust the length, width and overall size of the nose. If you hold down the ALT key you can move both opposite axises (top-bottom/left-right).

Step 10. Like said in the beginning you want to achieve a subtle result, which in Transform Tool terms means that the percentages on top W and H (for width and height) must never be lower than 90%, ideally it would hover between 95%-100% which reflects how big a change you have done.

Step 11. In our case a 95% seems to be doing the trick and the result.

<g:plusone href="http://www.photoshopinstructions.com/how-to-get-a-digital-nose-job/"></g:plusone>

Some like it tanned, some like it bleached white, no matter how you like skin tone you can get it following the next simple steps.
So lets see how you can lighten your skin tone. This process can be used in reverse to darken it as well, if you are looking for a more tanned look.

Step 1. Open you image of preference on your editor. We will use a tanned image for this tutorial so the change will be more obvious in the end.

Step 2. Create a duplicate layer of your image; simply right click on your original layer and choose duplicate. Name this as you wish. This is the layer we will work on.

Step 3. Choose you normal brush from the left hand side bar and choose from the color picker any color. Once thats done, start brushing on the visible skin areas of you picture. Namely the skin areas you want to lighten or darken its tone. Remember at this point to brush not only the face but all exposed skin, since it the end you want a smooth result.

Step 4. On the bottom right side of your editor, below the layers, is the Image button. Click it and then from the options choose Adjustment.

Step 5. This will bring up the Curves histogram window. Adjust the histogram according to your desired skin tone. If you the line towards Output the skin tone will lighten, if you move the curve line towards the Input the skin tone will darken. For the purpose of this tutorial we will lighten the skin tone.

Step 6. The histogram tool is really powerful although to some intimidating. Play around until you find the tone that works best for you.

For all the above we will see step-by-step how to get there.

Step 1. Open your picture on photoshop. We will use a rather dull one (hair-wise) to make the effect more obvious.

Step 2. Use the lasso tool to select the hair area. This is probably the most time consuming step of this tutorial, so take your time to get it right! Zoom in the hair area using the magnifying glass and bit by bit select the hair area. In the end you should end up with a dotted line halo effect like this.

Step 3. We will now create a “fill layer” on our selected area, that we will fill with color, which will basically be the new hair color of our choice. So on your top nav bar choose Layer->New Fill Layer -> Solid Color and hit OK.

Step 4. You will be presented with a color picker window. Slide the intensity bar on top so you can get a solid color. Notice how the hair color changes in the background.

Step 5. We will choose a deep orange color which for the time being will look pretty horrible, but thankfully we are not done yet.

Step 6. On top of your layers you will see the blending mode for your “fill layer”, this is set by default to normal that basically masks the entire original layer. We will set this to soft light mode. Just click on the drop down menu and choose Soft Light mode.

Step 7. This will result in your “Fill Layer” blending with the original hair color quite convincingly. You may find the color still a bit too strong, but no worries you can adjust this by double clicking on your fill layer. This will pop the color picker window and you can simply play around with the light and intensity slider.

Step. 8 Finally play around a bit with opacity to give you an even more natural effect.

And here you go with your final result. All wholesome all natural and risk free! Enjoy!
