In previous posts we have presented various text effects like, 3D typography and Fire Text. In this one we will see how to get a super cool effect combining several elements and is fairly simple to achieve too.

Step 1
First we need to create a new canvas with black background. The following settings are recommended:

Step 2
Create your type mask text using the Horizontal Type Mask tool as shown in the picture below:

Using the Horizontal Type Mask tool pick an area where you want your title to appear and type away.

Step 3
Using the Fill tool, fill the inside of your letters with white colour.

Step 4
Next pick the Smudge tool and smudge the edges of your text. For this pick a big brush area around 35cm diameter.

Step 5
Next step is to colourize your text. Bring up the Color Balance dialogue menu from the bottom right bar of your PS, and play around with the Shadows, the Midtones and Highlights as shown and hit OK. This will give you the burning effect.

Step 6
Moving on we will add some Gaussian Blur effect. Simply go to the Filter menu from the top toolbar, hit Blur and then Gaussian Blur and OK.

Step 7
To create the Neon effect you will need to duplicate your image and choose Linear Dodge on the copied layer. This will give the outline of your layer a neon like fluorescent look.

Step 8
Using the Horizontal Type Tool this time we will create another text layer to fill in the Neon fonts we created in the previous step. Choose the same font size and type the same word/words with your original text and overlay the new layer on top of your original one.

Step 9
Finally we will add the glow to our text. Double click on the layer of your Neon object and scroll down to “Outer Glow”. Change the glow color to a red glow. Your Burning Neon Effect is complete!

You might be familiar of 3D graphics applications like 3D Studio Max, Maya, Xara 3D etc. These are used to create 3D Text, but they all have some drawbacks. These are complex 3D Softwares, so a normal user finds them difficult to use and navigate with ease. They also need to be procured and installed on your system separately. So why do you need them when you require are less? You can create nice looking 3D effects with Adobe Photoshop.

Although Photoshop is a 2D image editing tool, you can create text that looks like 3D with minimal expertise. In fact, this is exactly what we’re going to focus on and show you in this tutorial.

We will learn to write ‘Chocolate’ in real moulded chocolate. To kick things off, create a new file in Photoshop. We used 530 x 192 pixels for dimensions but this can of course be anything of your choice.

With the text tool, type the text you would like to work on. Select a font with a bold look, it looks better in 3D.

Using a transform mode (Ctrl + T) make the text slanting using the nodes. Use ctrl+drag on the nodes to adjust in perspective mode.

This layer will work as the front of your 3D Text, so now we must create an extruded look. To duplicate the layer, press Shift+Down Arrow to bring the new layer 10 pixels down.

Select the lower layer and press Ctrl+Alt+Up Arrow 9 times. It will create 9 new layers moving each layer up by 1 px. This gives our object a 3D depth look.

To differentiate the first layer and give it a more refined look, we will apply some effects to it. Open the layer effects on the first layer, check ‘Bevel and Emboss’. Use the following settings

Under Bevel and Emboss, also check Contour and use following value

Also give Drop Shadow effect with these values

Your image will now hopefully look something like this

Lets add a reflection effect. Select all the layers below the front text and merge them (Press Ctrl+E). Duplicate the merged layer and give the new layer 20% opacity. Bring down the transparent layer by pressing Shift + Down Arrow for 10 pixels. This will work as a reflection. There are many ways to add a reflection to your text; you can check other tutorials for more advanced reflections.

Almost Done, if you want, you can also add a gradient fill to the background for better presentation!

Now, flip the text 90 degrees CCW, you can do this by using the transform tool under ‘edit’. After this we’ll apply the wind filter, you can do this by going to Filter -> Stylize -> Wind, make sure to apply wind from right to left. Repeat this step 3 times.

Flip the text back using 90 CW (edit -> transform again) and add a gaussian blur filter (Filter -> Blur -> Gaussian Blur -> 7 pixels). Now make a new layer (ctrl+shift+n) and go to Image -> Apply Image.

Now it’s time to utilize the first magic, go to Image -> Adjustments -> Hue/Saturation and make sure ‘colorize is selected’. Set the hue to 40 and the saturation to 100.

Duplicate this layer (ctrl+j) and go again to hue/saturation, this time set the hue to -40. Now set the layer on color doge and click ctrl+e which will merge down the layer.

After this we’ll use liquify which is placed under the filters menu, press “W”, select brush size 50, with a density of 40, you can keep the pressure at 100. We’re now going to use the dodge tool to create some cool flames by ‘dragging the wind up’. After you’ve added the first set to flames, lower the brush size to add more details to your flames, using the same technique.

After you’ve done this, type your text again, but this time in black - move your text ‘into’ your old text. Now duplicate layer 1 (the new layer, use ctrl+j again) and drag it above the other layers. Set it on screen and leave the opacity to 100%, both these things can be handled from inside the layers menu.

Now add a layer mask and take the gradient tool, take the linear gradient white to black and drag from top of the text to the bottom. After this, use the smudge tool at 60 pixels and drag over the black letters you don’t want to be black.

Create a new layer and go to Image -> Apply Image, set this new layer to screen and the opacity to 60%. On top of this we’ll use Gaussian Blur with the radius 50 pixels (Filter -> Blur -> Gaussian Blur). Again, create a new layer and go to Image -> Apply Image. We’ll now make a new layer once again and go to Image -> Apply Image, important is to set the opacity of this layer to 50% this time, after this press ctrl+t.

After this, go to Edit -> Transform -> Perspective to create a shadow effect by mirroring the image, this will make the text float and look really cool!

Hopefully, if you’ve done all the steps right, you’ll have something like this on your screen.
